Have you heard the saying that “April showers bring May flowers”? It’s true, the breathtaking flowers that we have in the South depend on plenty of water and just the perfect amount of sunlight. We have several iconic plants in our part of the country that make our area unique and gorgeous. Flowering plants such as the dogwoods, azaleas, magnolias, crepe myrtles, and roses are special to our area and they add such an amazing canopy throughout our landscapes.

Dogwood Trees
Did you know that the Dogwood tree is the most popular flowering tree that can be found throughout Alabama during the Spring? This deciduous tree can grow to be about 20 to 30 feet tall and usually has a wider measurement than it is tall. The gorgeous white or pink blossoms are very distinguishable in the Spring, and they are also showy in the Fall, with deep reddish brown shades of leaves. This iconic tree is often planted in Southern yards as an ornamental addition to the landscape.

Azalea Bushes
Azalea bushes can be found in a variety of blossom colors, including white, light pink, dark pink, and purple. These bushes can be easily spotted underneath canopies of trees and along the perimeter of lawns. They have distinguishable funnel-shaped blossoms, and this hardy plant is rarely disturbed by insects or disease. Additionally, once established, the azaleas need little attention, in order to shine brightly throughout the spring, summer, and fall.

Magnolia Trees
Magnolia trees are deciduous and are evergreen. Depending on the variety of the Magnolia tree, they can grow up to be about 75 feet in height. The magnificent shade of a Magnolia tree can be a welcoming spot on a hot, summer day. The same is true for the beautiful, very fragrant blossoms that they provide. The unique blossoms smell like a fresh bowl of lemons and can make any centerpiece fragrant and exquisitely welcoming.

Crepe Myrtles
Crepe Myrtles can be found throughout the Southeastern area, and are distinguishable by their smooth, muted bark and the myriad of blossom colors that they offer. Blossoms can be seen in white, pink, purple, red, or a combination of colors on the same tree. They can reach to about 25-30 feet in height, and they should be pruned annually in order to keep them healthy and aesthetically pleasing. Crepe Myrtles add brilliant color to lawns across our region, and they thrive in our hot temperatures.

Roses
Did you know that there are several hundred varieties of roses available? They are available in a huge variety of sizes, shapes, and in colors, too. There are climbing roses, trailing roses, rose trees, and rose shrubs. The colors are amazing and intriguing, and anyone should be able to find a color of rose bush that they enjoy and that will complement their landscape. Roses are a distinctive plant, are fragrant, and can provide brilliant color for your lawn environment.
